Hammond, Louisiana — A 13-year-old student has been arrested following a shooting incident at Tangipahoa Alternative School that left an adult in critical condition and prompted a full school lockdown, according to local police.

Shooting occurred during morning drop-off

Authorities in Hammond reported that the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday when an adult was bringing the student to campus. A confrontation reportedly broke out between the student and the adult after the student refused to exit the vehicle.

Police said the situation escalated as the vehicle left the school area, and gunshots were fired shortly afterward.

School resource officer intervened

A school resource officer stated they initially observed an argument between the student and the adult before the shooting occurred. Moments later, the officer reportedly saw the student approaching with a firearm. The student was taken into custody without incident.

Victim in critical condition

The adult victim was transported to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition, according to authorities. Officials have not released further details about their identity.
