Highway 52 Fatal Crash in Wausau, WI Under Investigation: New Details Point to Possible Meth Use

Wausau, Wisconsin — A tragic head-on collision on Wausau has gained renewed attention as investigators release new details in an ongoing criminal case tied to a fatal crash on U.S. Route 52 that claimed the lives of an elderly local couple.

The victims, Shirley L. Erickson, 81, and Arlen Erickson, 82, were killed in a violent crash near Highway 52 and Forest Lawn Road on September 26, 2025. Authorities confirmed both were properly restrained at the time but died due to the severity of the impact.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Marathon County Circuit Court, investigators allege that 37-year-old Adam H. Borchardt of Antigo crossed into the opposing lane moments before the collision, striking the Ericksons’ Nissan Rogue head-on.

Crash reconstruction findings indicate both vehicles were traveling within posted speed limits at the time of the incident, with no mechanical failure detected. This has led investigators to focus heavily on human factors in the case.

Authorities further allege that Borchardt tested positive for methamphetamine following the crash, a development now central to the ongoing investigation into possible impairment. Officials are also reviewing statements suggesting he may have swerved in response to a deer before losing control.

A passenger in Borchardt’s vehicle sustained serious injuries and required surgical treatment.

As the case proceeds through the legal system at Marathon County Circuit Court, investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.

The community continues to mourn the loss of Shirley and Arlen Erickson as authorities work toward a full legal determination of responsibility.
